After attaining a 2:1 degree in Art Practice from Glamorgan University, Calwyn followed a practical path: engineering. But at last, he has returned to a buzzing rural life – and his artistic dreams.
Artist's Statement
"I spent 34 years as a Fitter and Turner in the textile factories and steelworks of Gwent. But today, my life in rural Monmouthshire is a complete contrast. These days, I divide my time between keeping bees on various farms, producing Usk Valley Honey for local shops, and working as an artist.
Here in my Gilwern studio, I create paintings of landscapes - abstract scenes of ambiguity where I play with scale microcosm, and macrocosm. I like to include dramatic contrasts in tones, colours and textures derived from the natural environment in order to move the spectator’s emotions. When I’m out on the land with the bees, I’m soaking up ideas from direct observation, which I then distil in the peace of my studio."
