Gallery Two - Janet Bowler

Lancashire lass Janet Bowler grew up surrounded by the landscape paintings of her eminent father, Josiah Moore, but took the sometimes-neglected still-life as her true love. Aren’t they lovely?

Artist's Statement

"I love still-life! It could appear to be a very restricting genre. After all, what more can be said about a few objects on a table? But, somehow, the very simplicity of the subject opens the mind to endless possibilities of expression.

In planning a painting, it’s not only about finding the objects but about what I want to say. What mood will it have? What colours? Is it about stillness or celebration? The magic happens when the group is set up and all is quiet. In looking at that green apple against cerise silk, the everyday world melts away...

I like this quote from Paul Klee: “Art does not reproduce what we see; rather, it makes us see.”
